What an MMO Ribbon Anode Is

An MMO ribbon anode is a narrow strip of titanium coated with a mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalyst. Ribbon is laid out as a grid, with uncoated titanium conductor bar carrying current from the rectifier cable to every ribbon, so that a large surface — such as the underside of a storage tank or a reinforced concrete deck — receives evenly distributed current.

The standard coating is iridium-tantalum (Ir-Ta) MMO, which is suited to soil and concrete that contain no chloride or very little.

Titanium Conductor Bar

The conductor bar is uncoated Grade 1 or Grade 2 titanium strip to ASTM B265, supplied in 150 – 152 m coils at about 0.052 kg/m. It connects to the ribbon grid and to the rectifier lead cable.

Inspection

Each batch ships with an outgoing inspection report that records measured values. The inspection items for ribbon and conductor bar are agreed with the order; the methods used across our anode range are described on the titanium anodes overview.

Samples, Shipping and Response

Samples: 1–2 sample anodes can be supplied for evaluation before you order.
Shipping: anodes have been shipped to Malaysia and Dubai (UAE). We quote FOB, CIF or DDP; for DDP we handle import customs clearance.

FAQ

Why is there no fixed current rating for ribbon? The current a ribbon can deliver for a given life depends strongly on what surrounds it. In concrete the permissible anode current density is far lower than in sand or soil, so a single figure would be misleading. Send the medium, the area to be protected and the design current density, and we will rate the ribbon for that design.

Which width should I choose? 6.35 × 0.635 mm is the standard size. The 12.7 mm widths carry more coated surface per metre, which reduces the length of ribbon needed for a given current.

Can the ribbon be used in seawater or high-chloride soil? The standard Ir-Ta coating is intended for low-chloride environments. For chloride-rich conditions, tell us the environment so the coating can be specified accordingly.
