MMO Tubular Anode for Cathodic Protection

MMO Tubular Anode for Cathodic Protection

What an MMO Tubular Anode Is

An MMO tubular anode is a titanium tube coated on its outer surface with a mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalyst. In an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system it discharges current into the electrolyte — soil, fresh water or seawater — while the titanium itself is not consumed. One tube design covers most groundbed and water applications; capacity is scaled by choosing the diameter, the length and the number of anodes in a string.

The tube is Grade 1 or Grade 2 titanium to ASTM B338. A standard Φ25 mm anode, for example, is a Φ25 × 1 × 1000 mm tube coated over its whole outer surface.

Standard Sizes and Current Ratings

Φ16 × 5002.5 A15 A20 years
Φ16 × 10005 A30 A20 years
Φ19 × 5003 A15 A20 years
Φ19 × 10006 A32.5 A20 years
Φ25 × 5004 A23.5 A20 years
Φ25 × 10008 A47 A20 years
Φ32 × 5005 A30 A20 years
Φ32 × 100010 A60 A20 years

The ratings correspond to an anode current density of about 100 A/m² in soil and fresh water and up to 600 A/m² in seawater. They are typical design values: other sizes, longer design lives and ratings for a specific electrolyte are calculated per project.

Configurations

  • Single anodes: bare coated tubes for installation by the contractor.
  • Anode with cable: each tube factory-connected to its lead cable.
  • Anode strings: several tubes connected along one cable, for deep-well and vertical groundbeds.

Common cable insulation systems are XLPE/PVC and PVDF/HMWPE; cable type, cross-section and length are made to order.

Coating

The tube carries an iridium-based mixed metal oxide coating. Ruthenium-iridium (Ru-Ir) systems are used where chlorine is evolved, as in seawater and brine; iridium-tantalum (Ir-Ta) systems where oxygen is evolved, as in low-chloride soil and fresh water. The coating system is confirmed per order against the electrolyte.

Inspection

Every batch is shipped with an outgoing inspection report that records measured values. It covers:

CheckAcceptance
Tube materialChemical composition conforms to ASTM B338 Grade 1 (or Grade 2 as ordered)
DimensionsDiameter, wall and length as ordered; outer surface fully coated
Coating thickness (X-ray)≥ 4 µm
Bend test, 180° around a Φ12 mm mandrelNo coating peeling at the bend
Tape testNo visible black residue on the tape
AppearanceNo stains or contamination; per tube fewer than two scratches, each under 10 mm long and 2 mm wide, and fewer than two scuffs, each under 5 mm²; no exposed substrate

Packing

Anodes are packed in wooden crates on foam liners, with each string’s cable coiled and labelled by well or position number.

Samples, Shipping and Response

  • Samples: 1–2 sample anodes can be supplied for evaluation before you order.
  • Shipping: anodes have been shipped to Malaysia and Dubai (UAE). We quote FOB, CIF or DDP; for DDP we handle import customs clearance.
  • Response: every enquiry receives a reply within 24 hours.

FAQ

Why does the same anode have two very different current ratings? The rating is set by how fast the coating is consumed, and that depends on the reaction at the anode. In seawater the anode mainly evolves chlorine, which consumes the oxide coating very slowly. In soil and fresh water it mainly evolves oxygen, which also acidifies the anode surface and wears the coating faster. For the same design life the tube can therefore be run at about six times the current density in seawater.

Can I get a size that is not in the table? Yes. Diameter, length, coating and design life are made to order; send the operating conditions and we will return the rating for that design.

Which cable should I specify for a deep-well groundbed? That depends on the gases and chemicals in the well. PVDF/HMWPE dual insulation is the usual choice where chlorine may be evolved; XLPE/PVC is common elsewhere. Your CP designer’s specification takes precedence.
