MMO Wire Anode for Cathodic Protection

MMO Wire Anode for Cathodic Protection

What an MMO Wire Anode Is

An MMO wire anode is titanium wire coated with an iridium-tantalum (Ir-Ta) mixed metal oxide catalyst. It is easy to install and low in cost: it can be laid as a continuous anode, built into flexible anodes, or installed inside tanks. Current output and design life are set by the wire diameter and the operating current.

The substrate is Grade 1 titanium wire to ASTM B863.

Current Output by Design Life

Wire diameter20-year design30-year design50-year design
Φ1.0 mm67 mA/m45 mA/m28 mA/m
Φ1.5 mm89 mA/m65 mA/m41 mA/m
Φ3.0 mm195 mA/m130 mA/m78 mA/m

A longer design life is reached by running the same wire at a lower current. The ratings are typical design values; wire diameter, coating and output are designed to order for a specific current requirement and life.

Applications

  • Connected and non-connected horizontal groundbeds
  • Shallow vertical groundbeds
  • Above-ground and underground storage tanks
  • Water storage tanks
  • Cable protection

Supply

Wire anodes are supplied on spools, each labelled with its serial number, product name, diameter and length — for example 200 m of Φ1.5 mm wire per spool.

Each batch ships with an outgoing inspection report that records measured values. The inspection items for wire are agreed with the order; the methods used across our anode range are described on the titanium anodes overview.

Samples, Shipping and Response

  • Samples: 1–2 sample anodes can be supplied for evaluation before you order.
  • Shipping: anodes have been shipped to Malaysia and Dubai (UAE). We quote FOB, CIF or DDP; for DDP we handle import customs clearance.
  • Response: every enquiry receives a reply within 24 hours.

FAQ

Why is the substrate standard ASTM B863 and not B348? ASTM B863 is the specification for titanium and titanium alloy wire; ASTM B348 covers bars and billets. The material test certificate for the wire states the standard it was produced to.

What does the 50-year rating mean? It applies only at the lower current shown in the table: a Φ1.0 mm wire designed for 50 years is rated at 28 mA/m, against 67 mA/m for 20 years. Where more current is needed, a larger diameter or more wire is used rather than running the wire harder.

Can wire anodes be supplied with cable connections? Yes. Wire can be supplied as bare wire on spools, or built into flexible anodes with a feeder cable connected every 3 m — see MMO flexible anodes.
