Technical Guide: Titanium Forgings

Titanium Forgings — From Billet to Precision Shape

Titanium forgings are produced by applying compressive force to titanium billets or ingots at elevated temperatures, reshaping the metal into rings, discs, blocks, shafts, and custom near-net shapes. The forging process refines the grain structure, eliminates internal porosity, and delivers superior mechanical properties compared to cast or machined-from-plate alternatives.

At Titanium Seller, forging is part of our daily production rhythm. The rings you see here — freshly forged, inspected, and crate-packed for shipment — represent a typical order from our Baoji workshop. No showcase pieces, just consistent quality rolling off the line.

Available Forms & Specifications

We supply titanium forgings in a wide range of shapes to suit your engineering requirements:

  • Forged Rings: OD 100–2000 mm, wall thickness 20–300 mm, height up to 500 mm
  • Forged Discs / Pancakes: Diameter 50–1500 mm, thickness 10–400 mm
  • Forged Blocks / Slabs: Custom dimensions per drawing
  • Forged Shafts / Bars: Diameter 50–500 mm, length up to 3000 mm
  • Custom Near-Net Shapes: Open-die and closed-die forging per your specifications

Surface finish: As-forged (black skin), rough machined, or finish machined to your tolerances.

Grades & Standards

GradeUNSTypical Applications
Grade 2 (CP-Ti)R50400Chemical processing, marine hardware
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)R56400Aerospace structures, high-strength components
Grade 7 (Ti-Pd)R52400Chemical reactors, corrosion-critical parts
Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI)R56407Medical implants, fatigue-critical aerospace
TC4 (Chinese equivalent of Grade 5)Defense, aviation, marine

Applicable Standards:

  • GJB2744 — Chinese military standard for titanium and titanium alloy forgings
  • ASTM B381 — Standard specification for titanium and titanium alloy forgings
  • AMS 4928 — Ti-6Al-4V forging, solution treated and aged
  • AMS 4967 — Ti-6Al-4V bars, wire, and forgings
  • EN 2002-1 — Aerospace series, titanium alloy forgings

Our Forging Capabilities

Our partner mills in Baoji operate hydraulic presses from 800 to 8,000 tonnes, equipped with:

  • Precision temperature control: Forging temperature monitored within ±15°C to ensure optimal grain refinement
  • Full heat treatment: Annealing, solution treatment, and aging per specification requirements
  • 100% ultrasonic inspection: Per ASTM B381 or GJB2744 Class A/B requirements
  • Material traceability: Every forging ships with a Mill Test Certificate (MTC) including chemical composition, mechanical properties, and UT results

Quality Assurance

Every titanium forging undergoes:

  1. Raw material verification — Incoming titanium sponge and ingot with full chemistry certification
  2. Forging process control — Temperature, reduction ratio, and deformation rate per qualified procedure
  3. Heat treatment — In calibrated vacuum or atmosphere furnaces with time-temperature recording
  4. Non-destructive testing — Ultrasonic testing (UT), penetrant testing (PT) as required
  5. Dimensional inspection — CMM or manual measurement against drawing tolerances
  6. Documentation — MTC, UT report, heat treatment record, dimensional report

Packaging & Delivery

As shown in our workshop photos, forgings are carefully packed in wooden crates with foam cushioning to prevent surface damage during transit. We offer:

  • Standard packing: Wooden crate + foam + plastic wrap
  • Export packing: Fumigated wooden crate meeting ISPM-15 requirements
  • Delivery: FOB Baoji / CIF your port, typical lead time 15–30 days depending on size and grade
